  Last Weeks Headlines in Animation

  • Pixar has announced that it will be releasing Toy Story 4 on June 16 2017. John Lasseter will be directing, with Rashida Jones and Will McCormack writing the screenplay. Toy Story 4 will be up against Dreamworks’ How To Train Your Dragon 3, which has already been moved back from 2016 to 2017.
  • Big Hero 6 was released in the United States on the 7th of November. It has already grossed US$26.7 million at the box office. So far it has a 91 % rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a Metacritic Score of 75, and a 8.4 on IMDB.
  • 20 Animated Films have been submitted for the Best Animated Feature category in the 87th Academy Awards. The list consists of ‘Big Hero 6’, ‘The Book of Life’, ‘The BoxTrolls’, ‘Cheatin”, ‘Giovanni’s Island’, ‘Henry and Me’, ‘The Hero of Colour City’, ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2’, ‘Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart’, ‘Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return’, ‘The LEGO Movie’, ‘Miniscule – Valley of the Lost Ants’, ‘Mr Peabody and Sherman’, ‘Penguins of Madagascar’, ‘The Pirate Fairy’, ‘Planes: Fire and Rescue’, ‘Rio 2’, ‘Rocks in My Pockets’, ‘Song of the Sea’ and ‘The Tale of Princess Kaguya’.  With no Pixar films released this year the contest should be much more open. Since 20 candidates are up for consideration it is also safe to say that there will be 5 nominees for the Best Animated Feature Category at the 2015 Oscars.
  • The Trailer for Illumination Entertainment’s Minions movie was released on November 3. Minions is a spinoff of the Despicable Me series, staring the peculiar yellow creatures that work for the supervillain Gru. Watch it here.
